If you find yourself surrounded by good people, well-brewed coffee, and cool retro holiday pics, chances are you’re at one of Tribeca Coffee’s three stunning buildings in Centurion, Pretoria. Great coffee, good food and the best memories of places and times gone by is the feeling that hits you when you walk into the offices and look around at the photography of bygone holidays, retro cars and days in the sun… It all contributes to a feel-good positive outlook that this company is well known for. That said, it doesn’t mean that the workspaces at Tribeca are light-duty. The people here work hard at the brand and they need hardworking workstations, shelving, storage and lab furniture which we gladly provide as they understand and seek the economic value of the Raw aesthetic built into all of our products. We have been working with Tribeca since they moved into their first building many years ago (see more projects here) and since then they found ways to include Raw Studios in many of their ventures, including retail venues and mobile coffee stations. From stained coloured doors that complement their style to functional storage which keeps all the admin in place, Tribeca continues to curate their workspaces and combined with good coffee, and a laid-back atmosphere it has been an interesting and winning formula.

With 13 years in the making, multiple ranges and 100’s of products available, 45 minutes was just too short to give a complete picture, so we made a short video to introduce Raw Studios and showcase one of our cornerstone products. We put the same thought and care into the making of the video as we do with anything else so please have a look at it here:
The highly adaptable Epik leg component was developed and is now used in over 50 of our product iterations by simply adjusting the length and width of the leg. This design assures that we provide a shorter lead time, create less waste and speed up the installation process.
Despite all the project specific design/supply happening in the background, our Epik workspace range is proving itself as adaptable and timeless as ever with more and more businesses seeing value in a well-considered workplace.
A client recently approached us, stating that “Our workspace had become a grey, muted and uninventive environment, with staff members confined to their desks, silently completing one task after the next and shying away from others behind their cubicles”.
When Raw was asked to help, we knew immediately that beyond the essential focus work areas, the office needed agile spaces, spaces which encourage change and enable new ways of working without restrictions. Here’s the low down of how we transformed their offices:
Firstly, places where employees could meet up and merge ideas were introduced to break outdated rows of tables. We added a standpoint to the mix to let innovation sprout by enabling co-creation moments.
Then, we added pause areas to help change the rhythm of the workplace and offer a moment to refuel.
Also, to get employees out of their seats, to come together and brainstorm, a hub was added making collaborations and presentations easier.
Take a walk through the project and look around in this 360° video for an immersive experience of work Epik.
A month down the line, we chatted to the client about their new workspace, and this time their tune had changed: ”Raw Studios equipped us with the tools needed to draw people out to engage in impromptu interactions, to share inspiration and get ideas flowing freely. It was an innovation game-changer for us”.
“Had enough of what?” the unenlightened employer may ask.
At RAW we are fighting the system, the system that keeps providing us with ill conceived, unsustainable, badly designed and ridiculously pollutive office furniture and workspaces. The same antiquated system that treats employees as numbers and doesn’t acknowledge health and wellbeing.
It’s 2017, for Pete’s sake, the world has moved on and so has the workplace. Let’s abolish that outdated ‘thinking’ of what an office is and acknowledge the right to healthy, ergonomic and just generally well considered workplaces that we, the lifeblood of companies everywhere, deserve.
The unenlightened employers may say: “What is even the use of this ‘workspace movement’ shenanigans? Everyone just sits at a computer and slaves away. It is not a playground. We are here to work, it’s serious business.”
To them we say, Consider this: Creativity is now widely considered the main driving force within business and the creation of spaces that are directly inducive to creative thinking and furthers easy collaboration between colleagues, is a prerequisite of companies at the cutting edge of innovation. By ignoring the movement companies will risk: stagnating, falling behind and being unable to retain valuable human talent.
So what are the workers’ demands? How do companies turn this around and avoid an uprising?
1. More innovation and creativity
Old offices restrict us, and instil fear into our creative minds*. We are scared of doing something bold, because our environments don’t encourage or facilitate it.
The dated 70s colour palette of beige and yellows and browns, accentuated with orangey wooden laminate textures, overdosed with stacks of paper and files is not going to encourage the brain to think outside the box.
inspiring workspaces = out of the box ideas = innovation = improved turnover
*Note: ‘creative’ is mentioned as an umbrella term that not only includes art and design, but also a universal creativity, for example; taking on plans differently, making changes to the regular routines, making an innovating process that can or will benefit the company, learning new programs… creativity is not just colours and paints and graphics; it’s the way you do the norm differently.
2. Healthier environments
Properly designed workplaces do not have Volatile Organic Compounds floating around, turning our brains into mush and causing respiratory problems. They do not cause long term injuries or ailments.
3. Improved employee/colleague retention
Add value to the working day by supplying us with user- centred furniture and spatial design. We immediately enjoy being at the office, minimising the risk of losing us to opposition.
4. Increased collaboration and sense of community
The spatial planning and furniture design of the workplace will make a company an inviting and uplifting environment that encourages participation and a sense of belonging amongst colleagues.
There won’t be any room for alienation anymore.
5. Higher productivity rates
By bringing in healthy, lighter and well planned workplaces, we can get the most out of ourselves, each other or our employees. User- centred design ensures comfort and considers the senses of the user occupying the space. Comfort ensures we can focus on the task at hand and not get distracted by trivial annoyances of the space we must work in.
So when all the above- mentioned aspects are brought together, a holistic, full circle of benefits emerges and improves the work life of all.
We can help.
